Unguided moose hunts are in no way easy. These hunts require one to be in excellent physical condition and mentally ready for a work out. Although many are fortunate to take these huge animals close to their drop camps, this is very seldom the case. To be successful, you must be willing and able to hunt up to at least 2 miles from your campsite. The packing can be very challenging.
Moose season is in the month of September. Non-resident hunters do not require a registered guide to hunt Moose in Alaska.

For over 21 years we have been arranging and booking Alaska unguided / drop off moose hunting, at no charge to our clients.

Alaska unguided Moose hunting is a great adventure at an affordable price. Unguided moose hunting is for the experienced hunter who wishes to act as his / her own hunting guide and needs no assistance in the wilderness. If you are in good physical condition, a drop off unguided moose hunt is the most economical way to hunt.

We strongly recommend an Outfitted hunt: You will be completely outfitted with all the camp gear you need for a successful Alaska hunting experience. The equipment provided is of the highest quality and field proven for an efficient functional Alaska out camp.  Bring your rifle and personal gear and let the outfitter take care of the rest. The outfitted hunts may be arranged as either float hunts or drop camps.

For the unguided hunter, the logistics and expense of shipping your own equipment to hunt in western Alaska can be overwhelming. It is the goal of the outfitted hunting program to make it as easy as possible for you to arrive in Alaska with just your personal gear, and be quickly and properly prepared to enter the field with all the equipment necessary for a successful hunt.  In addition to flight services, you will be provided the equipment described below. If you have any questions about this or other equipment you think you may need, please let us know.

You will be provided all of the food for meals during your hunt. These supplies will include a mix of fresh foods, canned and dry packaged foods, and freeze dried meals. 5 gallons of fresh water are provided at the start of each hunt. River water is boiled or purified as needed to replenish supplies. Fresh food and water supplies are often replenished by air craft during camp checks and meat pick ups.

In most instances you will be dropped into the field via float plane onto a river or lake. Depending on the camp location and hunt strategy you will likely be issued either an inflatable raft, canoe or motorized skiff. Included with each boat are oars/paddles, life jackets, foot pump, patch kit, throw lines and other required accessories...

Unguided Moose drop off float hunts: A float hunt starts at one point and ends at a designated point down river. Usually between the two points the flight service is unable to land and check on you. The advantages of a float are that you are able to hunt much more area and sometimes an area that is less hunted. But not always. The disadvantages are you have to set up and break down camp many times, usually in the dark. The air charter is not able to land and take out your moose when you kill it. You must haul it with you for the entire float. Unguided Moose floats are 60 - 120 river miles. Alaska Unguided moose float hunts can be very rewarding, but you must be able to stop and hunt for a couple of days when you see good moose signs. This is an excellent way to hunt but is not for everyone as it can be very physically challenging.

Unguided Moose drop off, drop camps: This is on a stretch of river that the flight service can take off and land with a full load. You set up your camp and hunt from that spot. You can realistically hunt an approximately five miles radius from your camp. There are a lot of lakes and sloughs off the river that are excellent hunting and water is always close. This makes packing much easier than carrying moose meat out long distances on your back. You can hunt until dark every night and come back to a comfortable camp.

Inflatable canoes offer, mobility to range up and down rivers from a fixed base camp and are able to transport heavy loads over shallow narrow water.
