Horseback Vacation Oregon

HELLS CANYON

A horse pack trip in to the North America's deepest canyon with 900 miles of trails that can lead you on the journey of a lifetime. Imagine a horse pack ride on trails that crisscross open grassy benches and thickly timbered draws; trails that cross level flats and fade into the horizon; and steep narrow trails that were blasted into sheer rock bluffs. Trails for the experienced as well as the novice horse back rider await you leading to prehistoric sites representing a 10,000 year history of the Native American Culture as well as historic ruins of the American West.

EAGLE CAP WILDERNESS

Eagle Cap Wilderness is the largest wilderness in the State of Oregon. It is a land of alpine vistas, granite and marble peaks, pristine lakes and sparkling streams. The peaks range from over 9500 ft down to 3600 ft. The Eagle Cap Wilderness is the home of eagles, deer, elk, bighorn sheep, and mountain goats which can be spotted around the 58 lakes in the area. The fishing is outstanding in most of the lakes and streams for Dolly Vardin, Rainbow and Eastern Brook Trout. It is a photographers paradise with all the beautiful wildflowers, birds and wildlife. This horseback trip is on a trail system that leads you throughout the wilderness on a journey that you will remember for a lifetime.

Deluxe Guided Trips

Each trip is customized for your group and all you need to bring is your own personal gear.  There are a number of options available to make your trip an experience that you'll never forget. Some of your options include:

  1. Choice of Hells Canyon (May - mid July) or Eagle Cap Wilderness (mid July - Sept.)
  2. 3 - 7 days in camp
  3. Set up a base camp and explore away from the camp on a daily basis, or have a progressive camp where camp is moved a time or two.

A horse pack trip is a wonderful way to get away from the pressures of everyday life. Breathtaking sunrises and sunsets and an awesome array of shining starts over a campfire are treasured moments that are imprinted in ones mind forever.

A typical horseback trip begins at the trailhead around midmorning. Guests have a chance to get to know their saddle horses while the guides pack up the mules. Then we head up the trail.

Most 3 day and some 4 - 5 day trips are spent at 1 single campsite. This allows great flexibility during layover days for guests to enjoy individual interests such as day rides, fishing nearby lakes or streams, hiking, photography, or just relaxing in camp. On 4 - 7 day trips you may choose to "progress" through the wilderness.

Depending on the terrain of the area, rides vary from 8 - 12 miles per day, usually arriving at camp around 3:00 PM to allow time for setting up camp. Guests normally pitch their own tents to allow the guides time to begin preparing a mouth watering ranch style meal.

We normally alternate a traveling day with a resting day, or two, throughout the trip. We try to plan our routes to allow flexibility in the trip. On occasion change in weather persuade an unscheduled layover day. Outstanding fishing holes have also been known to alter trip schedules.

Drop Camps

For the do-it-yourselfer, we offer summer drop camps  in the Eagle Cap Wilderness through July and August. We load your camping gear on the mules and give you a horseback ride in to the location of your choice. We then come back on a designated day to pack you out.
